Descendants of Samuel Hunter - Index

DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL HUNTER (1797 - 1877) WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN & MARY HUNTER (nee CAMPBELL..known as Mary nee LINNEY when married)

Welcome to the Hunter Family web pages.

After many years of fruitless searching for a Mary Campbell it has now been found that Mary was married to John Hunter as Mary Linney!

On the marriage certificate Mary was stated as being a 'foundling' and hence her parentage is unknown. Birth records of the first 2 children show her maiden name as Linney (or similar) and have dates that are the same for those family members which we know were born in Ireland. Later birth certificates in Scotland from 1861 (and of my grandfather 1875) show Campbell as the maiden name. The second child who later became Alfred was originally named Patrick (on a birth certificate and in a census return) and then Peter (in another census record). Mary took the maiden name of Campbell in Scotland because she was probably brought up by a family of that name.

Photo believed to be Samuel Hunter C1850 John's father was Samuel Hunter (pictured on left) and was born 1797, marrying a Mary A.(Ann?) Cameron in C1828.(This information is yet to be confirmed conclusively although evidence points to this being correct). Samuel's father was William Hunter.
We have now found descendants of Samuel Hunter still on the family farm at Bruslee! They have confirmed that Samuel had the following children - William, John, Letitia (married name Beggs - hence the Beggs memorial cards in Mary's photo album. To see these cards click here and it will open in a new window.), Elizabeth (a spinster) & David. These appeared in his will of 1877 (Click here to see a copy of the will in new page - this is a large file). John received 20 pounds from the estate. To see his receipt for the legacy click here. (Worth in 2001 prices - 1370 pounds!). A son Samuel has not been confirmed - he did not appear in the will.

This is a work in progress as not all family members have been traced so should you find that you can provide information to fill in any gaps please feel free to forward the information to the e-mail address provided.
(The information is the latest available to 31st May, 2003)

Headstone View of and from the grave siteWhen I first saw the site more than 30 years ago it was just bare earth between two memorials erected by other families. It is a real pleasure to see that the family has finally been able to erect a suitable memorial to our pioneer ancestors. As you can see the graveyard is on a hillside overlooking a pretty valley with orchards and gardens. While it is not the valley where they had their own orchard & gardens it is within a few kilometres of where they settled. Photos were taken by Judith McLauchlan who like me is a great grandchild of John & Mary. (Click on photos to see larger image)
