Employment - Duties & Experience

  • Junior Bank Clerk - General duties relating to bank transactions through tellers and the clearing of cheques & deposits to other banks and branches. At the branch offices functions widened to cover all aspects of over the counter banking processes.
  • Audit & Accounting Clerk (Milne & Burgess and Annells Hunwick & Co.) - General auditing duties relating to the checking of primary entries (debtors, creditors, receipts and payments) and the review of ledger entries of capital and expense for correct allocation. Stock audits for accuracy of end of year values. Debtor review including audit mail outs of statements for errors, omission or misappropriation. Preparation of clients accounting records to Balance Sheet level for final accounts and preparation of tax returns. Preparation and lodgement of clients annual returns to the then companies office, including changes to directors and other company matters. Registration and maintenance of clients Business Names.
  • Secretary/Manager/Administrator (Youth Hostels Association) In charge of the day to day operations of the Association which expanded over the period of nearly 30 years to have an asset base of near 1 million dollars. In the last years of employment there was a membership base of around 5,000; a hostel network of more than 10 sites including the flagship Adelaide hostel of 50 beds. Instigated the computerisation of the accounting and membership records in the late 1980's. Responsible for the accounting records and preparation of financial statements including tax returns for more than 30 years (includes a period as honorary treasurer before employment). Responsible for the efficient management and operation of hostel properties. Some involvement with marketing and promotion of the Association.

Attended Norwood Boys Technical School 1953 - 1956 and obtained Leaving Technical Certificate.

1957 Undertook Bookkeeping Course at the S.A School of Mines (now University of S.A.)

1958 - 1960 Part completed accountancy course, S.A School of Mines (now University of S.A.)

1969 - 1972 Obtained Certificate in Group Work at Institute of Technology (now University of S.A.)

Computer Skills -

  • Knowledge of Cadzow Tech Pty Ltd designed Accounting & Membership software C1987
  • Worked with Microsoft Office - Excel & Word.
  • Have worked extensively with Lotus Smartsuite
  • Experience in simple HTML web design
  • 15 months experience in Sage Handisoft suite of software for Company Register, Tax, Ledger, Accountants Time & Billing
  • Completed 12 hour intensive course in MYOB Accounting V12 (aka V14)

Current self employment and other casual work -

From 1999 - 2006 undertook courier work for Messenger Press delivering the local newspaper in a section of the Norwood area

From 2000 until May 2005 delivered brochures to letterboxes for Salmat & PMP Distribution in Maylands and Stepney areas.

From late 2004, set up book keeping service as a self employed contractor.

In March 2005 obtained a contract to provide administrative, book keeping and tax return preparation services for Tony Buttery & Associates, accountants in public practice in the Burnside area. This work is all computer based using a suite of accounting and tax software

Wrote and privately published a book - Short History of YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 (ISBN 0-646-37117-7)

As a member of the Lange Reunion Committee published a book - Descendants of Christian Lange in Australia 1838 to 1980 (ISBN 0 9593849 0 1). (assisted in editing and preparation of data.)

Assisted in the publication of the book - The Family of John and Mary Hunter.(Editorial. photos & data.)

Member of the Hampel/Roehr Family Re-union Committee - Preparation of the family history of the Roehrs for inclusion in the publication which was launched in Tanunda in October 2007.

Member and Treasurer of the Marryatville High School Old Scholars Association.
