Introduction by the author to the first impression:

I have written this short history in the 50th anniversary year of the formation of the Youth Hostels Association in South Australia so that there would be a record , even if it is only an abbreviated version, for those who are interested in how YHA was developed in this state.

While every endeavour has been made to ensure accuracy I must apologise if there are any errors or significant omissions. With respect to names I have shown maiden names in brackets for those where I know both surnames. All others are the last known surname of the person which could be either a married or a maiden name.

Being a short history only and not a definitive record I have needed to take decisions regarding the contents including the degree of detail which is included. For example: activities and the personalisties involved is only covered for the period to the end of the 1960's. As I do not have sufficient information about how the Activities Committee organised itself, the various personel involved and the activities programmed I am not qualified to write about the period from 1970. I have however included a sample of a 3 month programme which was published in the association's magazine. The administration of the Association is also only briefly covered as it is not the scope of this short history to analys this aspect in depth.

This history is a private publication and the information contained therein is based on personal reminiscences by various persons and myself as well as published public papers from YHA. I have also based the chronological record on an article written by myself and published in the Association's magazine 'Hostelling' for the 40th Anniversary of YHA in 1988. Opinions expressed in the history are of course my own and I take responsibility for them.

There is a picture gallery in section 10 of the history some of which also appeared with the original 40th anniversary publication in the YHA magazine 'Hostelling' Many photos were taken by Margaret Williams as well as other members including the writer.

The text for this publication has been produced in such a way that it can be easily amended and a new version produced with the updates. Production is based on the receipt of orders. There is no official price for the book or CD ROM but a donation of $15 per book or $10 for the CD would be gratefully accepted to defray costs of production.
